Last Supper, Images of Christ

Communion and Baptism, the two ordinances of the church, provide us beautiful images of Christ. Through the gospel message, and these two ordinances, God has given us the pictures of Christ upon which to meditate. He would have us to remember Jesus by what he did – his love, his sacrifice, his compassion – not what he looked like.

Exceptions to the Rule

There are rules, or declarations, and then there are exceptions to the rule. The one who has the authority to make the rule or declaration is the only one with the authority to make the exception; except for, of course, someone with greater authority or power. For example, in John 6:44, Jesus declares the rule, “No man can come to me…”, and then makes the only exception to the rule, “except the Father which hath sent me draw him…”

Buy Truth, Sell Not (2)

Truth is not always popular, especially when the truth hurts or when it runs contrary to ever-changing cultural ideas. Many people reject the idea of absolute truth, but a principle that changes and is subject to the interpretation of man could never have been truth to begin with. Truth is constant. Truth has value. Let’s explore the application of Proverbs 23:23 together.

The Generation Gap

Differences in understanding and points of view between generations are natural, but can be very detrimental. Within the Biblical pattern of a family-integrated congregation, the church comes face to face with this generation gap every time they assemble. How do we address these differences, or distinguish between scriptural principles and cultural issues? All the more critical is the need to nourish and strengthen our relationships across the generations, so that peace, love, fellowship, and understanding can all abound to their fullest.

Where There is No Vision, part 3

The wise man Solomon wrote, “where there is no vision, the people perish…” We ought to be very interested in knowing what the vision is for the church. Without such understanding, we increase the likelihood that we will perish! Listen as Brother Matt concludes this series of messages.

Where there is no Vision, part 2

The wise man wrote, “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is made up of people who are united in a specific cause. Her vision is an understanding of her purpose as revealed in God’s word. In the second message of this series, Brother Matt helps us to more fully understand the various aspects of the vision the church ought to have. May God help us to embrace that vision so that we might avoid the dire consequence of perishing.

Where There is No Vision (1)

The wise man wrote, “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is made up of people who are united in a specific cause. Her vision is an understanding of her purpose as revealed in God’s word. In this first message of a series, Brother Matt begins to explore the many aspects of the vision the church ought to have. May God help us to embrace that vision, to help us better understand how to avoid the dire consequence of perishing.

If Every Member

Ask yourself the question, “If every member of the church was a church member like me, what kind of church would my church be?” After having his mind stirred listening to a sermon by Elder Ronald Lawrence, pastor of Bethel Church in Nashville, Brother Matt delivered this message to the congregation at Rocky Mount, which was both convicting and motivating. Ask yourself the question, and ask it often.

Repent and Be Baptized

Repent and Be Baptized

The message began with John the Baptist. Christ and the Apostles preached repentance and baptism. Today, the message continues to be repent and be baptized. Christ obtained eternal redemption by his death on the cross. As we experience the conviction of our sins, we then have the blessed privilege of following our Lord in baptism for the remission of sins; because of what Christ has already done in our heart and life, we are to be baptized and enjoy deliverance, liberty, and a release from the bondage of guilt.
